Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
There isn’t much that I can add to that. The quote pretty much speaks for itself.
You can’t fight fire with fire. In Jesus’ words, every kingdom divided against itself will come to destruction (Matthew 12:25-26). It can’t survive; it caves in on itself.
Light and love, the direct opposites of darkness and hate. They are the only way to drive out the darkness and hate in this world.
Next time you feel agitated and frustrated against someone else’s anger or negativity and you want to lash out at them, remember that returning someone’s evil for more of the same will never solve the problem. In fact, it will likely only breed more negativity and anger. The only thing more powerful than darkness is light; the only thing you can do to truly dispel hate is love.
Love is a powerful force for good, and we have been given an over-abundant and never-ending supply of it by our Savior. Let’s let it overflow into the world around us.
