“It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict, God’s job to judge, and my job to love.”
— Billy Graham

How would it change the church if we poured our efforts into loving people instead of judging them? How would it change the world?

As Christians, we sometimes assume it is our job to act as the “spiritual police” in our communities. We take it upon ourselves to root out and expose any sort of potential sin or heresy or dissent that we perceive to be wrong or harmful.

While there is a place for spiritual interventions and calling out sin, I think many times we’ve lost sight of the necessary balance and inadvertently crossed the line into pharisaical territory. We’ve become our own spiritual versions of accuser, judge, and jury without leaving enough room for the power of love or mercy. We shake the dust off our hands in satisfaction that we’ve done God a service by refusing to allow any perceived offense to go unchallenged.

In our well-meaning attempts to foster holiness and righteousness in our communities, have we unwittingly become like the stone-throwing religious leaders that Jesus spoke out against time after time? Continue reading →

“Peace. It does not mean to be in a place
where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work.
It means to be in the midst of those things
and still be calm in your heart.”
~ Unknown

Peace in the storm. That sounds sort of contradictory, doesn’t it? But think about it. Do storms and peace have to be mutually exclusive? Continue reading →

Too many of us are not living our dreams, because we are living our fears.
~ Les Brown

I’ve touched on this topic of fear more than once, but I think it really bears repeating.

I’ve been held back by my fears more times than I can count, and I know how detrimental it can be to one’s life and confidence. But because my confidence is not founded in myself but in the One who is the very essence of peace, courage, and confidence, I know that it’s very possible to reject those fears and truly live out my dreams and the purpose God has for me.

And if it’s possible for me, one of the most timid Tim’s out there, then I know for sure you can do it, too.

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,
but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
2 Timothy 1.7

People do not decide to become extraordinary. They decide to accomplish extraordinary things.

I just have to say, the guy who said this quote accomplished an extraordinary thing to come up with something this profound.

It’s really true. Maybe if we really understood this concept, we would all stop pushing ourselves and others to be so good and then beat ourselves down when we fail.

Everything-youve-ever-wanted-is-on-the-other-side-of-fear.-George-Addair-quote-via-tigerlilyva.com_-1024x512

Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.

– George Addair

I saw this quote recently and it’s become one of my favorite inspirations to remind myself of whenever I fall into worry or anxiety about my circumstances.

I’m writing a longer post about fear that I’ll put out later this week, but for now, just think about that statement. Really let it sink in. Then go and be victorious in everything you do the rest of the week.

It’s amazing what you can do when fear is no longer a factor.

“For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.”

Psalm 36:9 (NLT)

I don’t normally post a quote from the Bible as my quote of the week, but you’ve got to admit, it’s pretty much the greatest quote book on the planet. Written by the Creator of the universe. So yeah, I’d say He’s probably worth listening to.

This is just some plain, pure truth from God.

He is the fountain of life, the light by which we live and understand. He’s the source of our everything. Without Him, we are nothing.

“Wherever God has put you, that is your vocation. It is not what we do, but how much love we put into it.”

Recently I’ve been struggling with knowing what it is God wants me to be and do. I haven’t been feeling particularly useful or that my daily life is ultimately worth while in the situation I am in currently.

brain-ideas

Well, this last week has been pretty busy, with a lot of things distracting me from blogging, hence the lack of posts last week. I have a few longer posts in the works, but here’s some food for thought while you’re waiting, to help keep those brain gears from getting rusty.

You can never be overdressed or overeducated.

~ Oscar Wilde

I randomly saw this quote in a store recently, and I’m not sure if I agree with it or not.

My thinking is going something like this: Well, you probably shouldn’t go kayaking in an evening gown, am I right? And you know, too much learning does have the potential to fry the brain…at least that’s what I thought in college.

But maybe I’m not totally grasping his point. Or I could be overthinking it.

So, what do you think? I’d love to hear your opinion in the comments section.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

In case you haven’t noticed, I really like Emerson. He had a lot of really poignant and apropos things to say about life and society. The observation he makes in the above quote is no exception.

Isn’t that one of the truest things about our modern culture? Have you noticed how difficult it is these days to be valued for who you are, as a unique and special individual?

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realise they were the big things.”

– Robert Brault

I’m a highly introverted person, which means that often I can get so caught up in my own inner world of thoughts and ideas that I miss things going on in the external world around me. I can be oblivious to the little joys and details and intricacies of life and nature.

Not to say that my inner world isn’t full of its own small happinesses and enjoyments, but a lot of my time is occupied by obsessing and analyzing over the big things of my life, the huge, monumental aspects of life that I’m aspiring to or dreaming about.
